16-Month-Old Zariah Plummer Tragically Dies in High-Speed Crash After Amber Alert Pursuit in Virginia and Maryland

Virginia Beach, Virginia — A devastating incident unfolded on August 15, 2024, involving Dana Plummer, a 36-year-old father from Virginia Beach, leading to the tragic death of his 16-month-old daughter, Zariah Plummer, after a high-speed police chase ended in a fatal crash. The pursuit, which began in Virginia, ended on I-495 in Maryland, where Plummer’s vehicle overturned, resulting in the death of the young child.

The chain of events began when Virginia Beach Police responded to a stabbing incident on Wednesday night, where two female victims, including a juvenile, were found with multiple stab wounds. The victims were hospitalized and are currently in stable condition. Following the attack, Plummer fled the scene with his three children—Zayin, 7, Zayir, 5, and Zariah, 16 months—prompting the issuance of an Amber Alert as authorities worked to locate them.

The situation escalated when a vigilant citizen recognized Plummer’s vehicle from the Amber Alert and notified law enforcement. Attempts by Virginia State Police to stop Plummer on I-95 were unsuccessful, leading to a high-speed chase that crossed state lines into Maryland. The pursuit ended tragically when Plummer lost control of his SUV, which crashed and overturned on I-495.

Zariah Plummer was airlifted to Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C., but despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries. Her two brothers, Zayin and Zayir, were also hospitalized but survived the crash.

The incident has sparked a flurry of reactions on social media. Kathy A. Gambrell criticized the police pursuit, saying, "No high-speed pursuits when children are in play. Period. Track and make a safe stop. Cops should have known better and done better." Pamela Washington echoed the sentiment, calling the situation "Unacceptable!!!! Police knew children were in the car."

Dana Plummer was taken into custody at the scene and is currently being held without bond as investigations continue. Authorities from both Virginia and Maryland are working to piece together the events that led to this tragedy.

Virginia Beach Police Chief Paul Neudigate expressed his condolences, calling the situation an “unimaginable tragedy.” The community is left grappling with the loss, as the investigation remains ongoing.

Anyone with information regarding this case is urged to contact the Virginia Beach Police Detective Bureau or Maryland State Police.
