Aiyana Dillard, 19-Year-Old Griffin Resident, Passes Away from Sickle Cell Disease Complications

Griffin, GA – Aiyana Dillard, a 19-year-old resident of Griffin, Georgia, passed away on August 25th, 2024, due to complications arising from sickle cell disease. Aiyana’s untimely death has left her family and community in deep mourning.

Aiyana had been battling sickle cell disease, a genetic disorder that causes severe pain and other complications. Tragically, her condition led to heart failure. Aiyana was scheduled to have a pacemaker implanted, but her condition deteriorated before the procedure could be performed.

The loss of Aiyana is particularly heartbreaking as she leaves behind a 10-month-old baby, who will now grow up without her mother. Due to her pre-existing condition, Aiyana was unable to secure life insurance, placing a significant financial burden on her family to cover funeral expenses.

Kina Merritt, Aiyana’s mother, is organizing a fundraiser to help cover these expenses. As of now, $590 has been raised toward a goal of $10,000, with contributions from friends and supporters. Natasha Howard recently donated $50, while Davette Taylor contributed $100, making it the top donation.

Peterson’s Funeral Home shared a heartfelt message on behalf of Kina Merritt, urging the community to come together in support. "We come to you today with heavy hearts to ask for your support during a profoundly difficult time," the message read. "If you can, please consider sowing a love seed into this mother’s life to assist with her daughter’s final arrangements."

On Facebook, many have expressed their condolences and support for Aiyana’s family. The outpouring of compassion and kindness from the community serves as a reminder of the love and strength that surrounds them during this tragic time.

Aiyana’s family is deeply grateful for any assistance provided and hopes to honor her memory by ensuring she receives a dignified farewell. Those wishing to contribute can do so through the GoFundMe page set up by her mother.
