Alton, Illinois Community Mourns the Loss of Charlie Gerson, Aged 80, Following His Peaceful Passing

Charlie A. Gerson, Jr., a beloved member of the Alton, Illinois community, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 8, 2024, at the age of 80. Charlie’s life was a testament to his dedication to family, community, and his passions, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories.

Born on June 23, 1944, in Alton, Illinois, Charlie was the son of the late Jennie and Charlie Gerson, Sr. He spent his early years in Carrollton, Illinois, where he graduated from Carrollton Community High School in 1962. After high school, Charlie worked on the family farm before beginning his career as a mechanic at Krause & Son in Jerseyville, Illinois, in 1972.

Charlie met his wife, Ramona, in 1977, and the couple married in 1978. Together, they raised their family in Hardin, Illinois. In 1998, Charlie and Ramona took ownership of Krause & Son, rebranding it as Prairie Land Power, which they operated successfully until Charlie’s retirement in 2017. Charlie was also a committed member of the Jerseyville Rotary Club, serving as its President from 1999-2000.

Known for his love of tractors and farming, Charlie was an avid collector of antique Massey Harris, Ferguson, and Massey Ferguson equipment. His passion extended to gardening and attending antique tractor shows across the country. Charlie’s involvement in the Illinois Massey Collectors Association, Friends of Ferguson, and Tri-County Antique Club brought him joy and camaraderie.

Charlie is survived by his wife, Ramona, their five children, Rick, Ron, Chris, Nathan, and Shelly, along with five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his three brothers, Paul, Dave, and Bob Gerson. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, and several other close family members.

The community has expressed deep sorrow at Charlie’s passing. Annyce Winters shared on Facebook, "So sorry to hear of Charlie’s passing. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends." Another community member, Angela Sagez, posted, "So sorry for your loss. Keeping you all in my prayers and thoughts."

Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 15, 2024, at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, with funeral services scheduled for the following day. The burial will take place at Elsah Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given in care of the funeral home. Charlie Gerson’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
