Amarillo, Texas – James Lynn Boxwell, a prominent figure in the Amarillo community, passed away peacefully at his home on August 10, 2024, at the age of 85, surrounded by his loving wife and three daughters. His death marks the end of a remarkable life dedicated to service, both in his professional career and within his church community.
Born on March 2, 1939, in Amarillo, Jim grew up in Dumas, Texas, where he graduated from Dumas High School. He pursued higher education at Southern Methodist University (SMU) and later at the University of Minnesota, where he earned a degree in Mortuary Science. It was during his time at the University of Minnesota that he met Ginny Leduc Lenmark, who would become his lifelong partner. The couple married in Minneapolis on February 8, 1964, before returning to Amarillo.
For over 60 years, Jim worked at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home, a family-owned business where he became a respected leader in the funeral industry. His commitment to the community extended beyond his professional life, as he was a devoted member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. There, he served faithfully as an usher, a member of the Vestry, and Senior Warden, roles he performed with exceptional dedication.
The Boxwell family has expressed their deep gratitude for the care and compassion Jim received from the staff at Ruby Slippers and BSA Hospice during his final days.
Jim is survived by his wife, Ginny, and their three daughters: Becky McIlraith (married to Jay), Barrie Tapp (married to Randy), and Katy Terry (married to Mike). He also leaves behind six grandchildren and three great-granddaughters, each of whom will carry on his legacy. His brother Mike Boxwell, along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family, also survives him.
The community has been quick to express their condolences and share memories of Jim on social media. Dana Whitehead Rigg wrote, "Condolences to the Boxwell Family. Certainly a life well lived and a man of comfort and example to so many. May he Rest in Eternal Peace." Angela Stebbins added, "Such a good and faithful servant! What a loss for our world but a win for his because he is now whole and healed." Brandon Blassingame, reflecting on Jim’s influence in the funeral industry, noted, "Man what a shot to the community! A true legend in our industry! My condolences to our friends at Boxwell Brothers! Jim truly was the GOAT!!!"
Jim Boxwell’s life was one of service, faith, and dedication, leaving a lasting impact on the Amarillo community. His contributions, both personal and professional, will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him. Funeral services are still being planned, and the family has requested that any memorial contributions be made to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, the ASPCA, or Gracie’s Project in his honor.
