Born on March 2, 1939, in Amarillo, Jim was the son of Mary Josephine and Ivan Duane Boxwell. He spent his early years in Dumas, Texas, graduating from Dumas High School before pursuing higher education at Southern Methodist University (SMU) and the University of Minnesota, where he earned a degree in Mortuary Science. It was at the University of Minnesota that he met and married Ginny Leduc Lenmark on February 8, 1964. The couple returned to Amarillo, where Jim began his long and dedicated career at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home, serving the community with compassion for over 60 years.
Jim was also a devoted member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, where he served as an usher, a member of the Vestry, and Senior Warden. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, and his service to the church was a testament to his deep commitment to his spiritual community.
The outpouring of support from friends and community members on social media has been a testament to Jim’s influence and the high regard in which he was held. Dana Whitehead Rigg shared, "Condolences to the Boxwell Family. Certainly a life well lived and a man of comfort and example to so many. May he Rest in Eternal Peace." Angela Stebbins echoed this sentiment, writing, "Such a good and faithful servant! What a loss for our world but a win for his because he is now whole and healed."
Jim is survived by his wife, Ginny, and their three daughters: Becky McIlraith (Jay), Barrie Tapp (Randy), and Katy Terry (Mike). He also leaves behind his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a large extended family, including his brother, Mike Boxwell, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jo and Ivan Boxwell, and his son-in-law, Dr. Scott Sawyer, DDS.
The community continues to express its deep appreciation for Jim’s life and legacy. As Brandon Blassingame noted, "A true legend in our industry! My condolences to our friends at Boxwell Brothers! Jim truly was the GOAT!!!"
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, ASPCA, or Gracie’s Project, reflecting Jim’s lifelong commitment to his faith and his love for animals.
