Antonio Pontoriero, Beloved Father and Community Pillar in Toms River, New Jersey, Passes Away on Christmas Evening

Antonio Pontoriero, a cherished resident of Toms River, New Jersey, passed away on Christmas evening, surrounded by his loving family at Overlook Hospital. Born on May 12, 1933, in Spilinga, Italy, Antonio was the youngest of nine children. His life was marked by a remarkable journey filled with relentless energy, boundless generosity, and a deep devotion to his family and community.

After marrying Maria Pontoriero, Antonio and his wife courageously immigrated to the United States, settling in Newark, New Jersey. There, Antonio became a vibrant figure in the Italian-American community. His tireless work ethic as a longshoreman at Port Elizabeth and his willingness to help others secured him a special place in the hearts of many. Antonio played a significant role in establishing the Spilingese Social Club in Newark, serving as its president for many years and contributing to the acquisition of the club’s headquarters.

Antonio’s passions extended beyond his work; he enjoyed frequent visits to Atlantic City, tending to his garden, playing cards, and watching horse races. Despite his busy life, he maintained a strong connection to his Italian roots, often visiting family in Italy.

Antonio is survived by his sons, Michael and Pasquale, their wives, Mary Theresa and Elaine, and his beloved grandchildren, Maria Lauren, Maria Isabella, Anthony, and Natasha. He also leaves behind his sister, Elisabetta, and brother, Francisco, in Italy, along with his dear friend, Carmela Miceli.

Visitation will be held at Galante Funeral Home in Union on Tuesday morning, followed by a funeral mass at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Newark. Antonio’s family kindly requests memorial contributions be made to a charity of your choice in his honor. Antonio’s legacy of love, generosity, and community service will continue to inspire those who knew him.
