Archbishop Noel Treanor, Apostolic Nuncio to the European Union and Native of Monaghan, Passes Away at 73 in Brussels

Brussels, Belgium – Archbishop Noël Treanor, a prominent figure in the Catholic Church and the Apostolic Nuncio to the European Union, has passed away at the age of 73. The archbishop, originally from Monaghan, Ireland, died of a heart attack in Brussels yesterday morning, leaving behind a legacy of religious leadership and diplomacy.

Born on December 25, 1950, in Monaghan, Archbishop Treanor’s life was deeply connected to his Irish roots. He began his theological journey at Saint Patrick’s College, Maynooth, before advancing his studies in Rome. In 1976, he was ordained as a priest in Saint Macartan’s Cathedral in County Monaghan, marking the start of a distinguished career in the Church.

Throughout his life, Archbishop Treanor served in various parishes across Ireland, including Monaghan, Rackwallace, and Enniskillen, before being appointed Bishop of Down and Connor in 2008. His tenure in Northern Ireland was characterized by his pastoral care and efforts to address the challenges facing the Church.

In 2022, Pope Francis appointed him as the Apostolic Nuncio to the European Union, where he represented the Holy See in Brussels. His work in this role was marked by his advocacy for the Church’s teachings within the complex political landscape of the EU.

Archbishop Treanor’s passing has elicited an outpouring of condolences and reflections on his life and service. Ojeje Igwe Okoi shared on Facebook, "May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace. My condolences." Fely Ann Esplana-Rosales added, "Rest in peace po!" and Leosy Tupas echoed, "Rest in peace, Father."
