Archdiocese of Mobile Mourns the Passing of Fr. John L. Holleman, A Beloved Pastor and Servant of Faith

Mobile, Alabama – The Archdiocese of Mobile announced with deep sorrow the passing of Fr. John L. Holleman on the afternoon of August 18, 2024. Fr. Holleman was a cherished figure within the Catholic community, known for his unwavering faith, dedication to pastoral care, and extensive service across the globe. Fr. Holleman, originally from Mobile, Alabama, had a distinguished academic and ecclesiastical career. He began his journey at the University Military School in Mobile and continued his education at Tulane University in New Orleans. His pursuit of theological knowledge took him to The General Theological Seminary in New York City, Christ Church College in Oxford, U.K., and the Gregorian Pontifical University in Rome, Italy. Before becoming a Catholic priest, Fr. Holleman served as an Episcopal priest, fully embracing the Catholic faith and serving as a Catholic priest for the past 29 years.

He was the Pastor of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Semmes, Alabama, where his leadership and compassion left an indelible mark on the community. Fr. Holleman’s life was a testament to his deep commitment to his vocation and his love for the Church. His passing has left a void in the hearts of many who knew and admired him.

The Archdiocese of Mobile expressed its heartfelt condolences to all who were touched by Fr. Holleman’s life and ministry. In a Facebook post, the Archdiocese stated, "The Archdiocese of Mobile is saddened to inform you of the death of Fr. John L. Holleman, who passed away this afternoon, Aug. 18. Funeral arrangements are pending, and more details will be announced as they become available. May Fr. Holleman rest in peace."

Tributes have poured in on social media, reflecting the widespread respect and love for Fr. Holleman. Marcy Chamberland Little wrote, "Rest in peace! I still have a copy of your pamphlet on going to confession. God bless you, Fr. Holleman!" Eva Workman McDuffie added, "A faithful priest and servant of our dear Lord. Father Holleman will be greatly missed. May the divine assistance remain always with him and may the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen."
