David Zhu, a respected professor at Arizona State University, has been charged with the tragic shooting death of his wife, Mei Ling, in their North Scottsdale home. The incident, which occurred on the evening of August 17, 2024, has sent shockwaves through both the academic community and the Scottsdale area.

According to Sgt. Allison Sempsis of the Scottsdale Police Department, police were called to the couple’s residence on 9300 N 128th Way around 6:30 pm following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers discovered Mei Ling with a gunshot wound. She was rushed to a local hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

David Zhu, who was taken into custody at the scene, now faces charges of second-degree murder. The couple had been married for 15 years and were well-regarded in their community. Zhu was known for his significant contributions to engineering and his dedication to his students at ASU. Mei Ling was equally admired for her charitable work and support of her husband’s career.

The tragic event has left friends, colleagues, and students struggling to comprehend the sudden loss and the circumstances surrounding it. The university community is in mourning, and many have expressed their sorrow and disbelief at the turn of events.

On social media, people have shared their reactions. Traci Bingham commented, "It’s not just Arizona, this is occurring all over the U.S." Craig Milbourn added, "More guns they said, everyone will be safer they said. An armed society is a polite society, the NRA said. America, you got the country you wished for." Another user, Alpine Paul, lamented, "Arizona going to sh*t."

As the investigation continues, the focus remains on honoring Mei Ling’s memory and providing support to those affected by this profound loss. The community and university have come together, offering condolences and standing by those who are grieving during this difficult time.
