Atlanta Mourns the Loss of Darius Bottoms, Nephew of Future Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, in Tragic Mistaken Identity Shooting

Atlanta, Georgia – The city of Atlanta is grieving the tragic loss of 18-year-old Darius Bottoms, the nephew of councilwoman and future mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms. On June 13, 2014, Darius was fatally shot in what authorities believe to be a case of mistaken identity, sparking heartbreak and confusion within his family and the broader community.

The incident occurred just after 4 a.m. when a series of gunshots rang out. Atlanta police responded to a 911 call and discovered Darius in the driver’s seat of a silver Hyundai. Investigators reported that 18 shots were fired at the vehicle, with one bullet tragically striking Darius in the forehead, killing him instantly.

Darius was a promising business major at Atlanta Metropolitan State College, known for his dedication to his family and community. Those who knew him described him as an "outstanding young man," leaving his parents devastated by the sudden and senseless loss.

Police initially explored the possibility that the shooting was linked to a carjacking, but later, the investigation suggested a more disturbing motive. Authorities speculated that Darius might have been a collateral victim, potentially targeted due to his aunt’s political connections. However, after thoroughly examining possible suspects and any connections to gang activity, no evidence surfaced linking Darius to any criminal involvement.

The case saw a breakthrough months later when a ballistics report connected one of the guns used in Darius’s murder to a stolen firearm recovered from 18-year-old David Wallace. This firearm had been taken in a robbery just hours before Darius was shot. Despite this lead, the investigation into the true motive behind the killing remains unresolved.

Darius’s death has left an indelible mark on Atlanta, with many mourning the loss of a young man who had a bright future ahead. His untimely death is a grim reminder of the violence that continues to plague communities, leaving families and loved ones to seek answers and justice.
