Beloit Resident and Former Fire Chief Gerald Fredric Buckley Passes Away at 86

Beloit, WI – Gerald Fredric Buckley, a beloved resident of Beloit and a retired Fire Chief, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, at the age of 86. Born on December 4, 1937, in Reedsburg, WI, Gerald was the son of George and Laura Buckley.

Gerald graduated from Lodi High School in 1955 and later earned an Associate’s Degree in Fire Science. His commitment to service was evident as he proudly served in the United States Navy. On February 7, 1959, he married JoAnn Matchett in Clinton, WI, marking the beginning of a long and loving marriage.

Gerald dedicated nearly three decades to the Beloit Fire Department, where he rose through the ranks to become Fire Chief, a position he held until his retirement on December 31, 1994. Known for his leadership and dedication, Gerald’s career left a lasting impact on the community.

An avid outdoorsman, Gerald enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time on the golf course. He was also a passionate Green Bay Packers fan. Above all, he cherished the time he spent with his family and friends.

Gerald is survived by his wife of 65 years, JoAnn Buckley; his children, Rebecca Northrop of Rockton, IL, Kristine Brenny of Fridley, MN, Susan Buckley of Wayzata, MN, and Michael Buckley of Beloit, WI; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Evelyn Cooke of Sauk City, WI, and Virginia Lehr of Lodi, WI.

He was predeceased by his parents, several siblings, and his son-in-law, Tim Blankenship.

In accordance with his wishes, no services will be held. Memorial contributions in Gerald’s name may be made to the Beloit Fire Department. Gerald Fredric Buckley will be remembered for his dedication to public service, his love of the outdoors, and his unwavering commitment to his family.
