Beloved Educator Jennifer Jones Akin Passes Away at 53, Leaving Lasting Impact on Hoschton, GA Community

Hoschton, GA – The community of Hoschton, Georgia, is mourning the loss of Jennifer Jones Akin, a cherished educator and beloved member of the community, who passed away on Thursday, August 15, 2024, at the age of 53. Jennifer’s passing leaves a profound void in the lives of her family, friends, and the countless students she mentored during her nearly three decades of service with Gwinnett County Public Schools.

Born on April 17, 1971, in Decatur, Georgia, Jennifer was the daughter of Phyllis Still Jones and the late Donald Jones. She graduated from South Gwinnett High School in 1990 and continued her education at the University of Georgia, earning her undergraduate degree in 1994. Jennifer’s passion for education led her to further her studies, obtaining a Master’s Degree in Education from Piedmont College and a Specialist’s Degree in Education from Lincoln Memorial University.

Jennifer’s career as a schoolteacher spanned twenty-seven years, during which she touched the lives of countless students. Her dedication to her profession and her community was evident in every aspect of her life. She was also a devoted wife to Andy Akin, her husband of twenty-nine years, and a loving mother to their three children, William, Austin, and Julie, who, along with her husband Skyler Rabson, reside in Hoschton.

Outside of her professional life, Jennifer found joy in gardening, traveling, and spending time at the beach and by the swimming pool. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she was an active member of Hamilton Mill United Methodist Church in Dacula, Georgia.

Funeral services to celebrate Jennifer’s life will be held on Sunday, August 18, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Hamilton Mill United Methodist Church, officiated by Pastor Jason Mincey. Family and friends will have the opportunity to pay their respects as Jennifer lies in state from 1:00 p.m. until the service begins. Interment will follow at Snellville Historical Cemetery in Snellville, Georgia.

The family will receive visitors on the evening of Saturday, August 17, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The community is encouraged to share their memories and support each other in this time of grief.

Jennifer Jones Akin’s legacy of love, dedication, and service to her family, students, and community will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
