Berlin Community and Scientific World in Mourning as Marcus Maurer Goes Missing During Hiking Trip

Berlin, Germany – The scientific community and the family of Marcus Maurer are grappling with the heart-wrenching news of his disappearance during a hiking vacation. Marcus Maurer, a respected scientist known for his groundbreaking work in allergology and immunology, was last seen twelve days ago, and despite extensive search efforts, he has not been found.

The search for Marcus was called off a few days ago, with rescue teams fearing the worst. It is believed that Marcus may have met with a tragic accident, leaving his family, friends, and colleagues devastated. His wife, Jodie, and their children, Rasmus, Toben, and Lia, are enduring unimaginable grief as hope for his safe return continues to fade.

Anastasios E Germenis, a friend and colleague, shared his sorrow on Facebook, expressing the collective anguish of those who knew Marcus. He wrote, "It is with deep sorrow that we must inform you that our friend and colleague, Marcus Maurer, is missing. Twelve days ago, during his vacation, he set out on a hike and has not returned. A few days ago, the rescue teams called off the search. Both they and Marcus’s family now believe he may have met with a fatal accident. We are struggling to accept this and continue to hope every minute for Marcus’s return, but as time passes, our hope is fading. We fear that we may have lost a brilliant person, an outstanding teacher, a remarkable scientist, and a warm-hearted friend."

Marcus’s absence has left a significant void in the scientific fields he was passionate about. His contributions to mast cell research, mastocytosis, and related areas were highly influential, and his ability to inspire collaboration and spark new ideas was unparalleled. His colleagues, Martin Metz, Markus Magerl, and Torsten Zuberbier, echoed this sentiment in a joint statement, vowing to honor Marcus’s legacy by continuing the work he began.

"We will do everything in our power to continue ongoing collaborations successfully, develop projects he initiated, and keep the networks he created alive and flourishing," they wrote. "We sincerely hope that all who felt connected to Marcus will honor his work and contribute to its continuation."

The loss of Marcus Maurer is a profound one, not only for his family but also for the global scientific community. His memory will undoubtedly live on through the countless lives he touched and the groundbreaking work he leaves behind.
