Canton Community Mourns the Loss of Joshua Daniel Powell, Beloved Athlete and Scholar

Canton, Connecticut – The close-knit community of Canton is grieving the unexpected loss of Joshua “Josh” Daniel Powell, a 25-year-old former standout basketball player and scholar, who passed away on August 1, 2024. His death has left a profound void in the lives of his family, friends, and the many who were touched by his vibrant spirit.

Early Life and Adoption

Born in Guatemala, Josh was adopted at the age of five by Jack Laverne Powell and Lori Lynn Snow. Despite facing language barriers and the challenges of adapting to a new country, Josh’s determination and resilience quickly shone through. He was embraced by his adoptive family and community, where he became known for his infectious smile and positive attitude.

Academic and Athletic Achievements

Josh’s time at Canton High School was marked by outstanding academic and athletic achievements. A multi-sport athlete, Josh excelled in basketball, football, and track and field. His dedication to sportsmanship earned him the Canton High School Sportsmanship Award, while his effective communication skills were recognized with the Outstanding Achievement in Public Speaking award.

Continuing his academic journey, Josh attended Western New England University, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Pharmaceutical Business. His commitment to education was further demonstrated when he completed a Master’s degree in Organizational Psychology from the University of Hartford in just one year. His excellence on and off the court also earned him the title of Regents University Men’s Basketball Player of the Year.

Professional Success and Community Impact

After his academic pursuits, Josh transitioned into a successful career, working as a manager at a local vitamin shop. His expertise in health and wellness made him a respected figure among colleagues and customers alike. Known for his ability to connect with people, Josh’s impact extended beyond his professional life, as he inspired others to pursue healthy lifestyles and personal growth.

A Cherished Family Member

Josh’s love for his family was evident in every aspect of his life. He is survived by his father, Jack Powell, and his mother, Lori Snow, along with her partner, Martin O’Connell. His siblings, Zachary, Alexandra, Noelia, Jose Alberto, and Mikaela, remember him fondly for the close bond they shared and the countless memories they created together.

Celebrating a Life Well Lived

A Celebration of Life gathering is scheduled for September 7, 2024, in honor of Josh’s memory. This event will bring together those who knew and loved him, providing an opportunity to reflect on his many accomplishments and the joy he brought into the lives of others. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to The Joshua Powell Memorial Scholarship Fund, ensuring that Josh’s legacy of helping others continues.
