Carson Community Mourns Loss of Richard Mata and Vaa Fatu Following Tragic Shootings

Carson, California – The community of Carson is in mourning after a tragic series of events on Saturday night led to the deaths of Richard Mata, 45, and Vaa Fatu, 18, in two fatal shootings on East and West 234th Street.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department responded to reports of gunfire just before midnight. Upon arrival, deputies discovered Richard Mata fatally shot in the street at one location, while Vaa Fatu was found deceased in a vehicle nearby. Paramedics from the Los Angeles County Fire Department pronounced both men dead at the scene.

Richard Mata, a father of three, had recently moved back to Carson from Arizona. His sister has expressed profound sorrow, highlighting the immense grief felt by his family. Vaa Fatu, who had been dealing with health challenges and had recently undergone a kidney transplant, was remembered by his father as a kind and loving young man, further deepening the tragedy for his family.

As of now, the Sheriff’s Department has not released any information regarding potential suspects or motives behind the shootings. Investigators are examining any possible connections between the two incidents. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward as the community seeks answers and justice.

Expressions of grief and support have been shared widely on social media. Robert DjMotor Campos posted, "RIP Richard Mata," while Piceno Niko added, "RIP HOMIE." Richard Lopez simply wrote, "Prayers," and David Hernandez posted shortly after, expressing his sorrow.
