Clones, Co. Monaghan – Catherine McMahon (née Goodwin), a resident of 5 Carn Heights, Clones, Co. Monaghan, passed away on Wednesday, August 21, 2024. She died peacefully at Cavan General Hospital after a long and courageous battle with illness, surrounded by her loving family. Catherine, who was originally from Cooneen, Co. Fermanagh, was predeceased by her husband Gerry and her parents, Eileen and John Goodwin.
Catherine is survived by her children, Shane, Roisin, and Deirdre, her daughter-in-law Nicole, and her cherished granddaughter Clodagh. She will be fondly remembered by her sisters, Geraldine and Bridget, her brothers, Sean, Jimmy, Kieran, and Kevin, as well as her extended family, friends, and neighbors. Catherine’s loyal four-legged companion, Charlie, will also miss her dearly.
Her funeral arrangements include resting at the family home in Clones on Wednesday, August 21, from 5 pm to 9 pm, and Thursday, August 22, from 2 pm to 9 pm. The funeral Mass will be held on Friday, August 23, at 11:00 am at the Sacred Heart Chapel in Clones, with burial following at Mount St. Oliver’s Cemetery.
Family members have requested that instead of flowers, donations be made to the Cavan Oncology Unit, either through Martin’s Funeral Directors in Newbliss or via a donation box at the family home. Catherine’s funeral Mass can be viewed online, allowing those unable to attend in person to pay their respects.
Expressions of sympathy have poured in from friends and family on social media. Margaret McMahon posted, "Deepest sympathy to Roisin, Deirdre, and Shane. R.I.P. Catherine, a beautiful lady inside and out." Bernie Nic Conmidhe shared, "Condolences to all her family at this sad time, my thoughts and prayers are with you all. May Catherine RIP." May O’Donoghue added, "So saddened to hear of Catherine’s passing. My sympathy to her family."
