Charleston County Community in Distress as Search for John Mack Hitopoulos, Missing from Sol Legare Boat Landing, Continues

John Mack Hitopoulos, a 59-year-old resident of Charleston County, South Carolina, was reported missing on August 7, 2024, after his vehicle was discovered unoccupied at Sol Legare Boat Landing on James Island. The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office has issued an urgent appeal for information regarding his whereabouts, particularly due to his heart condition, which requires regular medication.

The last confirmed sighting of Hitopoulos was at the boat landing around 2:30 p.m. on the day of his disappearance. Described as 5’09” tall, weighing approximately 235 pounds, with a bald head and green eyes, Hitopoulos was last seen wearing khaki or light-colored shorts, a light blue shirt, and tennis shoes.

Concerned community members have taken to social media to express their fears and hopes for Hitopoulos’s safe return. Lynnie Seagraves shared her distress on Facebook, writing, "This just breaks my heart! What a great guy he is," and pleading, "God please keep my friend safe and bring him home!!" Other posts echoed similar sentiments, with one user questioning the extent of the search efforts, asking, "Why are y’all not searching the water??"
