Community in Knaphill Mourns the Tragic Death of Joel Stenning, Fatally Shot by Police

Knaphill, Surrey – The Knaphill community is grieving the loss of 29-year-old Joel Stenning, who was fatally shot by armed police in a tragic incident. Stenning, whose identity was formally confirmed on August 20, 2024, succumbed to complications from a gunshot wound to the abdomen, as revealed by a post mortem examination conducted on August 19. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting, and the case has been referred to the coroner’s office.

An inquest into the fatal incident is scheduled to commence on August 27 at the Coroner’s Court in Woking, Surrey. The inquest aims to uncover the full details of the case and address the critical questions concerning the police actions that resulted in Stenning’s death. The community and Stenning’s family are anxiously awaiting further information from the ongoing investigation, seeking clarity and accountability in the wake of this heartbreaking event.

Friends and community members have taken to social media to express their sorrow and pay tribute to Stenning. Sophie Ann shared a heartfelt post on Facebook, reminiscing about their long-standing friendship and the cherished memories they created together. She wrote, "Broken – from being born a week apart to reuniting when you came back to Surrey and terrorising me anytime you could. Thanks for all the memories. That cheeky smile. Ruth Suter and Georgie Van Heel also expressed their condolences on Facebook, with simple yet poignant messages saying, "RIP Joel," reflecting the collective grief felt by those who knew him.
