Community Mourns the Loss of Larry David Petersen, 73, Found Deceased After Months of Searching in Cottonwood

Cottonwood, Arizona – Larry David Petersen, 73, who had been missing since May 25, was tragically found deceased on August 14. The Yavapai County Medical Examiner confirmed on August 21 that the remains discovered by hikers in the area were those of Petersen, according to Cottonwood Police Department Sgt. Chad Sinn.

Petersen was last seen on May 25 near State Route 89A and Cornville Road, as he left Cottonwood in his white 2007 Ford Explorer. His disappearance prompted a widespread search, which ended in heartbreak when his body was discovered in a tent. Authorities have stated that foul play is not suspected, though the exact cause of his death remains undetermined, potentially linked to recent dental procedures.

Tony Bellovary, Petersen’s son-in-law, expressed the family’s gratitude in an email sent on August 17, thanking the community for their efforts in the search. Petersen’s daughter also shared her sorrow, stating, "With a heavy heart, our journey of looking for my father, Larry Petersen has ended. We cannot thank everyone enough for their ideas, their own personal searches, support, and many prayers."

The local community has also expressed their condolences on social media. Dave Cobb posted, "Prayers to others who are still searching for their missing person," and Lacy Duncan shared, "Sorry for the loss."

The discovery of Petersen’s remains marks a somber end to months of uncertainty for his family and the Cottonwood community, highlighting the emotional toll that such cases can take on all involved.
