Community Mourns the Loss of Thomas Berry, Delaware Volunteer Firefighter, Killed While Assisting at Accident Scene

Thomas "Tommy" Berry III, a dedicated volunteer firefighter from Delaware, tragically lost his life on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, while assisting a motor vehicle accident victim near Georgetown on Route 9. Berry, just 23 years old, was known for his unwavering commitment to his community, and his untimely death has left a profound impact on those who knew him.

The accident occurred just before 4:30 p.m. near the intersection of Lewes Georgetown Highway and Asphalt Alley. Berry, who was on his way back to County offices following a field assignment, encountered the crash and immediately took action to help. Unfortunately, his selfless act led to a heartbreaking outcome.

Berry’s passing has prompted an outpouring of grief and condolences from the community, including the New Castle County Police and Sussex County Department of Public Safety. Both organizations, along with Georgetown and Ellendale Fire Companies, where Berry volunteered, have expressed their deep sorrow over the loss of such a devoted first responder.

In a heartfelt Facebook post, the New Castle County Division of Police extended their "deepest condolences to the family and friends of Thomas ‘Tommy’ Berry III," acknowledging his dedication and service to the community. Similarly, members of the public shared their grief and support on social media.

Pat Droxler Reif posted, "May you rest in peace," while Nancy Horn Young added, "Our deepest condolences to all friends and family of this young first responder. So heartbreaking."

Sussex County officials confirmed that the flags in the county will fly at half-staff in Berry’s honor. County Council President Michael H. Vincent, who had also been a volunteer firefighter for many years, expressed that Berry’s "heroic act of kindness during a time of crisis" will never be forgotten by his friends, colleagues, and the community at large.

The crash investigation is ongoing, and the Delaware State Police are awaiting the Medical Examiner’s determination to conclude the cause of death. Meanwhile, the community continues to rally around Berry’s family, offering support and prayers during this difficult time.
