Community Mourns the Passing of Edgar Arrowsmith Roberts, Beloved Resident of New Church, Virginia

New Church, Virginia – The community is grieving the loss of Edgar Arrowsmith Roberts, a respected resident of New Church, who passed away peacefully at the age of 85 on August 10, 2024. Surrounded by his loving family, Edgar, affectionately known as Eddie, spent his final moments on his cherished farm, a place where he had embraced a life of tranquility and connection with nature.

A Life of Service and Devotion

Born and raised in Rahway, New Jersey, Edgar’s life was marked by service and dedication. He served in the United States Air Force, where he was stationed at Pease AFB with the Strategic Air Command. His military service was a source of immense pride, and he was often seen wearing his Air Force hats and American flag suspenders, symbols of his deep love for his country.

After his service, Edgar worked for 23 years in security at Merck Pharmaceuticals in Rahway. Upon retirement, he and his beloved wife, Barbara, relocated to Florida, where they enjoyed a life filled with leisure, travel, and family gatherings. In 2018, they moved closer to family, settling on a small farm on the Eastern Shore, where Edgar took great joy in tending to his garden, chickens, and the natural beauty surrounding him.

A Legacy of Love

Edgar leaves behind a loving family, including his wife Barbara, with whom he shared 65 years of marriage. He is survived by their three children: Laura, Susan, and Andrew, along with six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. His sisters, Linda and Joyce, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives, also mourn his passing.

Community Remembrances

The outpouring of support and love for Edgar and his family has been overwhelming. On Facebook, many friends and community members have shared their condolences and prayers.

Patty Borrelli expressed her gratitude for Edgar’s service, saying, “Rest peacefully, Sir. Thank you for your service to our country.” Sandra Jean shared, “We have all surely prayed for him and all of you. We are certainly sorry to hear of his passing. Praying you all find comfort in knowing he is no longer suffering. Prayers continued.” Elizabeth Chesser Taylor and Cindy Tate also sent their prayers to the family, reflecting the deep sense of loss felt by those who knew him.

Final Farewell

In accordance with Edgar’s wishes, there will be no formal service. Instead, a celebration of life will be held at a later date. The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Tunnels to Towers and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, two causes close to Edgar’s heart.

Edgar Arrowsmith Roberts will be remembered not only for his service to his country but also for the love and joy he brought to his family and community. His legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew him.
