Henrico County, VA – The community is reeling from the tragic loss of Retika Haider, a 22-year-old resident who was killed in a devastating car accident on Wistar Road on Monday, August 19, 2024. The crash, which also left an elementary school-aged child critically injured, has left family, friends, and the broader community in deep shock and grief.

Henrico Police responded to the scene of the two-vehicle collision at approximately 5:12 p.m. on Monday. According to the preliminary investigation, the crash occurred when the driver of a BMW lost control of the vehicle, causing it to fishtail and cross the center line. An Audi, traveling in the opposite direction, collided with the BMW’s rear driver’s side. Retika, who was a passenger in the BMW, was transported to a local hospital by family members who were near the crash site but was pronounced dead upon arrival. The child, also a passenger in the BMW, remains in critical condition.

Retika Haider was known for her infectious smile and a kind heart that touched everyone who knew her. She had recently graduated from a local college and was admired for her academic achievements and her dedication to helping others. Her sudden and untimely death has left an indelible mark on the community.

In the wake of this tragedy, the Henrico County community has come together to support Retika’s family and the injured child. Vigils and memorials are being planned to honor Retika’s memory, celebrating the positive impact she had on those around her.

As the investigation into the crash continues, the drivers involved are cooperating with authorities, and neither alcohol nor drugs are believed to have played a role in the accident. The community remains united in its grief, holding on to the memories of Retika Haider and offering prayers for the recovery of the critically injured child.
