Community of Jonesboro Mourns the Loss of Mark Gibson in Tragic Lake City Ambulance Accident

Mark Gibson, Jonesboro, Arkansas – The tight-knit community of Jonesboro is mourning the loss of Mark Gibson, a 56-year-old retired Charge Paramedic who dedicated his life to serving others. Gibson tragically lost his life in a fatal ambulance wreck in Lake City, Arkansas, on Wednesday, August 10, 2024.

Mark Gibson, who worked with Emerson Ambulance Service after a long career with the West Memphis Fire Department (WMFD), was providing care to a patient in the back of a 2018 Ford E-350 ambulance when the collision occurred. The accident also claimed the life of Janet Chapman, a 67-year-old resident of Blytheville, who was driving a 2024 Nissan Sentra. Reports indicate that Chapman crossed into the westbound lane, resulting in a devastating head-on collision with the ambulance. Both Chapman and Gibson were pronounced dead at the scene.

Cherie Gibson, Mark’s wife and the driver of the ambulance, along with Phyllis Moore, the 72-year-old patient being transported, sustained injuries in the crash. They were taken to Regional One Medical Center in Memphis, and their conditions remain unknown.

The news of Mark Gibson’s passing has shaken the community and his colleagues. The West Memphis Fire Department expressed their grief in a heartfelt Facebook post, stating, "Today the West Memphis Fire Department mourns alongside the Northeast Arkansas EMS community for the loss of one of our own, retired Charge Paramedic Mark Gibson."

The outpouring of support on social media has been overwhelming, with many sharing their memories and offering condolences. Lisa Holt Boling, a former partner of Mark’s at WMFD, reminisced, "He was kind, gentle, dedicated, and an excellent medic. He committed his life to helping others. You were a good man." Joshua Jones, a member of the community, shared, "I remember him; he helped save my life more than once."

The Arkansas State Police, led by Trooper Nash Thomas, are currently investigating the accident to determine its exact cause. As the investigation continues, the community remains united in their grief, offering support to the families of both Mark Gibson and Janet Chapman.

Mark Gibson’s legacy of service and compassion will be remembered by all who knew him. His dedication to his work and his community has left a lasting impact, and he will be deeply missed.
