David Handelman, Esteemed Journalist and TV Writer, Dies at 63 in New York

David Handelman, a highly regarded former print journalist turned television writer and producer, passed away on Thursday, August 15, 2024, at the age of 63. Handelman, who was born on April 23, 1961, in Scarsdale, New York, had an illustrious career that spanned both print and television, leaving a lasting impact on both industries.

Handelman began his career as a staff writer for Rolling Stone, where he covered a diverse range of subjects, including the Beastie Boys and the AIDS activist organization ACT UP. His talent and versatility as a writer led him to contribute to esteemed publications like The New York Times, GQ, and Vogue. In addition to his journalistic work, he edited several "HOT" issues and comedy-focused issues for Rolling Stone.

His transition to television was marked by significant achievements, including writing and producing for popular shows such as "The West Wing," "One Tree Hill," and "Nashville." Handelman was particularly known for co-writing the season 1 episode "Sword of Orion" for "Sports Night" and later joining the writing team for "The West Wing" during its fourth season.

On Facebook, his close friend Jacob Slichter shared a heartfelt tribute: "This is my dear friend David Handelman, who died yesterday from complications of cancer. He lived a beautiful life… I’m grateful to have known him, heartbroken by his loss, and I send love and comfort to all of his loved ones and friends."

Other friends and colleagues expressed their condolences, with Al Chan commenting, "Very sorry to hear of your friend’s passing, Jake. What a tremendous loss. My sincere condolences." Steve Spatucci added, "He sounds like a great guy," while David Van Taylor praised Slichter’s tribute by saying, "No surprise this is very well said."

David Handelman leaves behind his wife, Syd Sidner, whom he married in Central Park on New Year’s Day 2023, and two daughters. His family plans to release an official obituary at a later date. Handelman’s legacy as a writer and the inspiration he provided to his friends and colleagues will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
