David Neave and Rodney Ingram Tragically Lose Their Lives in Kangaroo Island Boating Accident, Community Mourns the Loss of Beloved Fishermen

Kangaroo Island, South Australia – The community of Kangaroo Island is mourning the tragic loss of two beloved locals, David "Cod" Neave and Rodney Ingram, both 65, who lost their lives in a boating accident on Wednesday, August 14, 2024. The seasoned fishermen were found near their capsized boat off the northern coast of Cassini, marking a heartbreaking day for the close-knit island community.

David Neave, affectionately known as "Cod" by his friends and community members, was a well-respected figure in Kingscote. The tragic accident has left a deep void, as both men were known for their love of the sea and strong ties to the island. The Wisanger Sports Club Inc., a prominent local organization, expressed their grief on social media, acknowledging the profound loss with the words, "It is with heavy hearts we acknowledge the tragic passing of David ‘Cod’ Neave & Rodney Ingram. Taken tragically on 14 August doing what they loved."

Friends and community members have taken to social media to share their sorrow and memories of the men. Damien Bates, reminiscing about a memorable moment with Neave, shared, "Vividly remember Cod grabbing me by the jumper at half time of 05 GF with tears in his eyes and said don’t let me down. Not many love this club more than him. Rest easy, boys." Another community member, Cyrita Williams, expressed the collective grief, stating, "So tragic. What a loss to our community. I’m sure there will be many going to miss these great blokes."

The accident, which is still under investigation, has highlighted the unpredictable nature of the waters surrounding Kangaroo Island. Kangaroo Island Mayor Michael Pengilly spoke about the widespread sorrow on the island, noting, "It’s a sad feeling across the island today … all we can do is assist those families as much as possible."

Police reports suggest that dense fog on Wednesday afternoon may have contributed to the accident, with speculation that a large wave could have overturned the boat, trapping Neave and Ingram inside the cabin. Despite their experience, it was revealed that the men often went without life jackets, which were found on board the retrieved boat. Safework SA has been notified, and a report for the coroner is being prepared as investigations continue.

As the island community grapples with this devastating loss, the memories of David "Cod" Neave and Rodney Ingram will continue to resonate with those who knew and loved them. Their passing is a reminder of the unpredictable dangers faced by those who make their lives on the sea, and of the enduring bonds that tie communities together in times of tragedy.
