Dennis Whitfield, Former Reagan Administration Official, Dies at 76 in Albany, Georgia

Albany, Georgia – Dennis E. Whitfield, a prominent figure in Republican politics and a former official in the Reagan administration, passed away on Sunday, August 18, 2024, at the age of 76. Whitfield, a native of Albany, Georgia, reportedly suffered a sudden heart attack.

Whitfield’s distinguished career in public service included significant roles in both the public and private sectors. From 1985 to 1988, he served as the U.S. Deputy Secretary of Labor, where he played a crucial role in the release of Workforce 2000, a pioneering report that laid the foundation for training and educating the workforce for the 21st century.

Before his tenure at the Department of Labor, Whitfield held key positions at the U.S. Department of Agriculture under President Ford and the U.S. Department of Energy during President Reagan’s administration. His involvement in Republican politics began as a regional political director for the Republican National Committee, where he eventually led their training and education programs from 1977 to 1980.

After leaving the federal government, Whitfield continued to impact public policy as Managing Partner at the Brock Group. He also held leadership roles with the American Conservative Union, Direct Impact, and the National Federation of Independent Business. Known for his sharp wit and intelligence, Whitfield was a respected educator who guided many through the complexities of both domestic and international political landscapes.

Dennis Whitfield resided in Alexandria, Virginia, with his wife, Linda Coulter Whitfield. The couple had recently celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary on August 6, 2024. Whitfield was also an active member of the First Baptist Church in Alexandria and a proud member of the Chi Psi Fraternity, having served as President of the University of Georgia chapter.

He is survived by his wife, Linda, his brothers Jeff and Steve Whitfield, his sister Karen Spangler, and his nephews, Seth and Drew Spangler. The date for his celebration of life service will be announced later.
