Dillon Community Mourns the Loss of Micah Mercer, Military Veteran, and Dedicated Family Man

Dillon, SC – The Dillon community is mourning the sudden passing of Micah Mercer, who died on August 15th, 2024, at the age of 62. Born in Galesburg, Illinois, on February 21st, 1962, Micah was a man whose life was defined by his service to his country and his deep love for his family.

Micah served honorably in the Army’s 6th Regiment Military Police for four years, exemplifying his dedication to duty and integrity. Following his military service, he continued his commitment to public safety as a member of the Galesburg Sheriff’s Department until he became disabled.

Micah’s love for his family was unwavering. He shared a deep bond with his fiancée, Melissa Lewis, and took great joy in spending time with his stepdaughter, Alissia Lewis, and his grandchildren, Kaiden and Little Miss B. He found peace and relaxation at the beach, a simple pleasure he cherished.

Micah’s passing was a devastating loss for his family, particularly Melissa, who was with him when he succumbed to a sudden massive heart attack. In the wake of his death, Melissa has organized a fundraiser to cover the costs of a military send-off at the National Cemetery and to settle unexpected bills left behind.

Melissa expressed her grief on Facebook, stating, "I will always love and cherish you, my Love. You took a piece of my heart to heaven with you!" Friends and family have shared their condolences and prayers online. Stephanie Hollaway Lewis wrote, "Melissa Lewis, love you so much, Darling! Micah loved you unconditionally! I’m so sorry for your loss!" Another friend, Gene Tyner, offered, "Prayers for the family n friends," while Rachel Winburn added, "Prayers for the family and friends."

Despite the challenges, the community is rallying around Melissa and the Mercer family in their time of need. The fundraiser, "Honor Micah Mercer’s Legacy: Support Needed," is still seeking contributions to ensure that Micah receives the military honors he deserves and that his family is supported during this difficult time.

Micah Mercer will be remembered for his life of integrity, his service to his country, and his profound love for his family. The Dillon community stands with his loved ones, honoring his memory and offering their support.
