Cleveland, Ohio – Dr. Robert Salata, a highly respected figure in the medical community and the STERIS Chair of Excellence in Medicine at University Hospitals Cleveland, passed away on August 26, 2024, at the age of 72. His sudden death was confirmed by a statement from the University Hospitals CWRU Department of Medicine, leaving the medical community and his colleagues in deep mourning.
Born on February 14, 1952, in Youngstown, Ohio, Dr. Salata dedicated his life to the advancement of medical education and the care of patients. His career spanned over four decades at University Hospitals Cleveland, where he was recognized as a global authority on infectious diseases and global health. He played a pivotal role in the creation of the Travel Medicine Program at UH and was instrumental in fostering collaborations with institutions such as Case Western Reserve University and Mulago Hospital in Uganda.
Dr. Salata’s influence extended far beyond his medical achievements. He was deeply committed to the education and mentorship of medical students, residents, and fellows. Known affectionately as "Dr. Bob," he left an indelible mark on those who had the privilege of working alongside him. His legacy of compassion, dedication, and intellectual rigor will continue to inspire future generations of healthcare professionals.

A celebration of Dr. Salata’s life will take place at the Church of the Gesu in University Heights, Ohio, on Friday, August 30, 2024, at 11:00 A.M. The family has requested that donations be made in his memory to the Dr. Robert and Mary Jo Salata Endowment for Excellence at the University of Notre Dame’s Eck Center for Global Health or the Gesu School Endowment.
