Elizabethtown, Kentucky – In a heartbreaking incident on Monday, August 19, 2024, 37-year-old Erica Riley and her 71-year-old mother, Janet Riley, were shot and killed outside the Hardin County Justice Center in Elizabethtown. The mother and daughter had arrived at the courthouse for an emergency protection order hearing when the tragic event unfolded.

Erica Riley, a resident of Elizabethtown, died instantly at the scene, while her mother, Janet Riley, who was from Hardinsburg, passed away shortly after being rushed to the hospital. The shooting also left another individual injured, who was later reported to be in stable condition.

The suspected shooter, identified as 46-year-old Christopher Michael Elder, was reportedly dating Erica Riley. The altercation occurred in the parking lot of the courthouse, where Elder opened fire. Following the shooting, Elder fled the scene in a silver car marked with spray paint. A massive manhunt ensued, culminating in a standoff with police in Christian County, western Kentucky. During the standoff, Elder shot himself and was subsequently airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in critical condition.

The incident has shaken the local community, prompting an outpouring of grief and concern, particularly regarding the issue of domestic violence. Several individuals took to Facebook to express their sorrow and frustration. Shay McAlister described the situation as "incredibly sad," while Stephanie Ann Fulkerson lamented the loss of Erica and her mother, highlighting that Erica was "a sweet girl in school and a great momma."

Other community members, including Tammy Rogers, pointed out the tragic irony of Erica seeking protection only to be killed by the very person she feared. Ashley McGlasson and Sayla Ray called for a serious reassessment of domestic violence laws, emphasizing the need for stronger protections for victims.

The Hardin County Justice Center and surrounding government facilities and schools were placed on a soft lockdown as a precaution following the incident. The investigation involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Kentucky State Police and the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office.

As the Riley family and the broader community grapple with this devastating loss, many are calling for prayers and support during this difficult time. Linda Voyles Greco urged, "Please lift so many prayers up for Breckenridge County, Kentucky… We all feel the pain, so heartbroken."

This tragic event underscores the ongoing issues surrounding domestic violence and the often devastating consequences when protective measures fall short. The community continues to mourn the loss of Erica and Janet Riley while seeking justice and healing in the wake of this senseless act of violence.
