Fargo Community Mourns the Loss of Jeffrey Fonder, Beloved Bartender and General Manager at Dempsey’s Public House

Fargo, ND – Jeffrey Fonder, a cherished figure in Fargo’s social scene and the longtime general manager of Dempsey’s Public House, passed away on Monday, August 12, 2024, at the age of 62. Fonder, affectionately known simply as "Jeffrey," was a beloved presence at Dempsey’s for nearly two decades, known for his warm, welcoming personality and deep connection with the community.

Jeffrey’s journey with Dempsey’s began when the bar opened in 2006, and over the years, he became the face of the establishment. His ability to make everyone feel like family, whether with a handshake, hug, or a heartfelt “Love you, brother,” endeared him to countless patrons. Longtime regular Dan Haglund remarked, “He was always happy to see you; he always had a hug for everybody.”

In addition to his role behind the bar, Jeffrey rose to the position of general manager, earning multiple accolades as Best Bartender in the High Plains Reader’s Best Of polls. His dedication to Dempsey’s was so profound that regulars often joked he was there more than the bar’s founders, Bert and Klaus Meyers.

Jeffrey’s impact extended beyond the walls of Dempsey’s, particularly within the Fargo/Moorhead music scene. He was a well-known supporter and advocate, whether booking bands or simply enjoying music from behind the bar or in front of the stage. Ben Hoos, a member of the Dempsey’s staff, described Jeffrey as “a beacon, a warm presence, and a fatherly figure” to many, and to the greater Fargo/Moorhead music scene, “a legend.”

The community has rallied to support Jeffrey’s family in their time of grief. Sharon Akin expressed her gratitude on Facebook, saying, “Wyatt Akin and I are so blown away by how this community has pulled together to help us out with making sure we can lay Jeffrey Fonder to rest. His family he built within the Dempsey’s Public House community is amazing, and we just want to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts.”

An artist from Fargo also honored Jeffrey’s memory with an illustration capturing his trademark beard and baseball cap, a tribute to the lasting mark he left on the community. The artist poignantly wrote under the image, “Thanks for making the downtown heart grow, Fonder!”

Jeffrey Fonder’s legacy of kindness, support, and camaraderie will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His contribution to the vibrant culture of Fargo and the many lives he touched will be remembered with affection and gratitude.
