Okigwe, Nigeria – In a tragic accident on Friday, August 23, former Heartland FC coach Christian Obi lost his life after the club’s bus collided with a tipper truck near Okigwe. The accident occurred as the team was traveling to Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, for the Ifeanyi Ekwueme TICO/SELECT pre-season tournament.
Christian Obi, a former Nigeria youth international goalkeeper who competed in the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, was at the front of the bus when the collision happened. The bus, attempting to avoid an oncoming vehicle, sustained serious damage in the crash. Obi tragically died on the way to the hospital.
Several other players and team officials were injured in the accident and are currently receiving treatment at a local hospital. The full extent of their injuries is yet to be confirmed.
NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau expressed his condolences, stating, “We are still stunned and saddened by the report. Our hearts go out to the immediate family of Coach Christian Obi, his friends and relations, the Imo State Football Association, and the Imo State Government, owners of Heartland Football Club.” He also extended prayers for the injured to regain their health swiftly.
On social media, tributes poured in for the late coach. Maduforo Pleasure Chioma wrote, "Chaii RIP sir," while Faith Oluwatosin Ojo posted, "May his soul rest in peace." Similar sentiments were shared by Michael Okanlawon, Umama Sunday, Ogungbemi Miracle, and Ara Mi De, all expressing their wishes for Obi’s soul to rest in peace.
Christian Obi, aged 57, led Heartland FC last season, which ended in the club’s relegation. His passing is a significant loss to the Nigerian football community, especially in Imo State, where Heartland FC is based. The entire football fraternity and fans are mourning the loss of a respected coach and former athlete.
