Grande Prairie, AB – The community of Grande Prairie is mourning the loss of Ruth Marie Barnes, who passed away on Sunday, July 21, 2024, at the age of 67. Ruth was a well-known and cherished member of the community, remembered for her compassion, intelligence, and the joy she brought to those around her.
Born on August 17, 1956, in Lacombe, AB, Ruth was adopted by Clarence and Orah Hagen, becoming one of six siblings. Her early years were spent on the family homestead in Gordondale, AB, before she moved to Grande Prairie to pursue her education in office administration.
Ruth met her husband, Brian Brewster, in Grande Prairie, where they started their life together. The couple lived in various locations, including Revelstoke, BC, and Whitehorse, before returning to Grande Prairie in 1998 to be closer to their daughter, Dawna.
Ruth’s career was dedicated to helping others, particularly through her work with agencies serving the Metis community and seniors in Whitehorse. She was known for her playful humor, often joking about her "fink," which endeared her to many.
Her passing has left a significant void in the community. On Facebook, friends and family expressed their grief and shared memories of Ruth. Marilyn Waldren wrote, "Rest In Peace Ruth," while Holly Mills-Sorgen shared, "I’m so sad to hear this. One of the good ones." Emilia Louise Hovorka and Shelley Vandepol also expressed their sorrow, with Shelley noting, "Ruth will be greatly missed."
Ruth is survived by her daughter Dawna, stepchildren Cameron and Tamara, grandchildren Tylene, Kendra, Willow, Max, and Taylor, and her sister-in-law Karen Hagen. She was predeceased by her husband Brian, her parents Clarence and Orah, and her brother Lawrence.
A celebration of Ruth’s life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations in her honor can be made to Grande Prairie’s Odyssey House.
