Greenbackville Resident Peter Lancho Dies in Tragic Hit-and-Run Accident on Lankford Highway, Melfa, Virginia

Melfa, Virginia – The small community of Greenbackville is in mourning after a tragic hit-and-run accident claimed the life of 66-year-old Peter Lancho over the weekend. The incident occurred late Saturday night, around 11:44 p.m., at the intersection of Lankford Highway and Main Street in the Melfa area of Accomack County on the Eastern Shore.

According to Virginia State Police, Peter Lancho was walking in the southbound lanes of Lankford Highway when he was struck by a dark-colored sedan. The driver of the vehicle did not stop and continued driving southbound, leaving the scene of the accident. Lancho succumbed to his injuries immediately following the impact.

The reason why Lancho was walking on the highway at that hour remains unclear, and investigators are still trying to determine whether he was crossing the road, walking along the shoulder, or involved in some other situation that placed him in the path of the vehicle.

The incident has left the community deeply shocked, as the loss of life in such a sudden and violent manner is particularly distressing. The hit-and-run nature of the accident has only added to the community’s grief, as there has been no immediate accountability for Lancho’s death.

Virginia State Police are working diligently to identify the driver responsible for the fatal collision. Witnesses have provided initial descriptions of the vehicle, which authorities hope will lead to the identification and apprehension of the suspect. The police are urging anyone with additional information, particularly about a dark-colored sedan with potential damage consistent with the accident, to come forward.

As the investigation continues, the involvement of the community is crucial in bringing justice to Peter Lancho and providing closure for his grieving family. The sudden and tragic loss of Lancho, a likely well-known figure within his Greenbackville community, has left a void that will be felt for a long time.
