Shane Grace – Augusta, Georgia: A high school football game between Laney High School and Westside was abruptly halted late in the third quarter after gunfire erupted near the stadium on Friday night. The incident sent players, coaches, and spectators scrambling for cover as chaos ensued.
The shooting occurred with 52.8 seconds left in the third quarter, with Westside leading 7-6. Witnesses reported seeing a vehicle driving up and down the street outside the stadium, firing shots into the air. The alarming sounds caused panic, and many fans fled the scene through the exits, only to return in confusion.
Laney coaches, who were filming the game from the press box roof, confirmed the presence of the vehicle and the gunfire. Shortly after, Richmond County Police arrived in large numbers, securing the area and bringing the game to an immediate halt.
As the stadium was locked down, both teams quickly retreated to their locker rooms. The remainder of the game was canceled following the incident.
