Jack McGowan Seeks Help to Identify Surfer Who Tried to Save His Brother-in-Law in Nantucket Drowning Incident

Nantucket, Massachusetts – A tragic incident occurred on Saturday at Ladies Beach, where a 31-year-old man lost his life after being pulled unresponsive from the water. Despite the swift and coordinated efforts of Nantucket lifeguards and the Nantucket Fire Department, the man, whose name has not been disclosed, sadly passed away after being transported to Nantucket Cottage Hospital.

The incident, which took place just after 4 p.m., was described as a "critical situation" by Nantucket Fire Department Chief Michael Cranson. Lifeguards at the scene acted quickly, initiating lifesaving measures as soon as the man was brought to shore. First responders from the Nantucket Fire Department arrived at 4:22 p.m. and took over with advanced life support procedures, but despite their best efforts, the man could not be saved.

Jack McGowan, the deceased man’s brother-in-law, reached out on Sunday morning seeking help to identify a surfer who played a crucial role in the rescue attempt. McGowan expressed his family’s deep gratitude toward the surfer who was the first to reach his brother-in-law in the water. According to McGowan, the surfer, who had dark brown hair, tan skin, black facial hair, and an orange board, attempted to save the man before lifeguards arrived on the scene.

"My sister and family would very much like to find out who he was so that we can thank him," McGowan said, urging anyone with information to come forward. He also extended thanks to the lifeguards, EMTs, and other beachgoers who assisted during the emergency.

The tragic drowning occurred on a day when all south shore beaches had been closed to swimming due to rough conditions. Lifeguards had raised double red flags, indicating that swimming was prohibited, but the hazardous waters still proved deadly.

This incident highlights both the bravery of individuals who spring into action during emergencies and the dangers posed by unpredictable ocean conditions. The community’s support in identifying the helpful surfer would bring some solace to the grieving family during this difficult time.
