James "JR" Rider of Dahlonega, Georgia, Passes Away at 82 After Extended Illness

Dahlonega, Georgia – James "JR" Rider, a beloved figure in North Georgia, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2024, at the age of 82 after battling an extended illness. Born on February 8, 1942, in Gainesville, Georgia, JR was the son of the late Henry Rider and Flossie Lance Rider.

JR Rider was well-known for his vibrant personality, his love for racing, and his passion for old cars. In his younger years, he gained local fame for his daring escapades through the hills in his modified cars. He was also the proud owner of JR’s Roadkill Café in Lumpkin County, a local institution cherished by the community.

JR is survived by his longtime partner, Sue Forester, and his children Donna Lynn Jenkins, Jeff Rider, and Nawana McHan, all of whom reside in Dahlonega. He also leaves behind a sister, Evelyn Waters, several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends who will deeply miss him.

Funeral services for JR will be held on Friday, August 23, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home, with interment following in Dahlonega Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home starting at 11:00 a.m. on the day of the service.

The community has shown an outpouring of support on social media. Debbie Brewster wrote, "Praying for his sweet family!" April Higgins Williamson shared, "Sending lots of prayers," and Sid Glenn expressed his sorrow with, "Rest in peace my buddy." Many others, including Loretta Grizzle, Camille Cantrell, and Unata Berrong, offered their condolences to JR’s family and loved ones.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in JR’s memory to the American Cancer Society, reflecting his enduring impact on those who knew him. His legacy will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and the entire community of North Georgia.
