Hiram, GA – The tragic death of Deputy Brandon Cunningham has left the Paulding County community in mourning after a deadly confrontation on Sunday, August 18, 2024. Authorities have identified the suspect in this devastating incident as 42-year-old James Samuel Atkins, who also lost his life during the encounter.
Deputy Cunningham, a dedicated member of the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office, was ambushed while responding to a domestic dispute at 30 Foggy Creek Lane in the Harmony Creek subdivision. The suspect, James Samuel Atkins, opened fire as Cunningham and his partner arrived on the scene, fatally wounding Cunningham before his partner could render aid due to the continuous gunfire. As more officers arrived, they too were pinned down, unable to reach Cunningham.
The incident not only claimed the life of Deputy Cunningham, who was just 30 years old and leaves behind two children, but also left Atkins’ 52-year-old wife seriously injured. She remains in the hospital in stable condition.
Sheriff Gary Gulledge expressed deep sorrow over the loss, stating, “We lost a hero last night. Brandon was a dedicated deputy and a hard worker. My heart breaks for his family, friends, and our staff. This senseless act of violence is beyond comprehension.”
Atkins, who had a long history of criminal activity, including multiple arrests for robbery and a charge related to marijuana possession, was later found dead, having taken his own life. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is now leading the inquiry into the events that led to this tragic outcome.
The loss of Deputy Cunningham marks the first time the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office has lost an officer in the line of duty. A memorial patrol vehicle has been placed in front of the Sheriff’s Office, where community members have been leaving flowers and condolences.
The community has been deeply affected by this loss, as highlighted by comments on social media. Judy Parker wrote, "Praying for family and friends during this difficult time. May God bless and comfort them." Another user, Zahratika, simply stated, "So very sad."
Funeral arrangements for Deputy Cunningham have yet to be announced, but the outpouring of support from the community underscores the profound impact of his loss. The Sheriff’s Office has vowed to continue seeking justice for their fallen officer, as the investigation into the incident continues.
