Chicago, Illinois – The 95th Annual Bud Billiken Parade, known as the largest African American parade in the United States, was marred by a shooting incident on Saturday, August 10, 2024. One man was injured in the altercation, which took place along the parade route. The victim, who was grazed by a gunshot, was quickly transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The parade, which is a significant cultural event aimed at inspiring Chicago’s youth as they prepare for the new school year, saw a heavy police presence following the shooting. Law enforcement responded promptly to reports of a fight involving over a dozen individuals, leading to multiple stampedes as parade participants and spectators fled the scene in panic.
Despite the chaos, the parade continued along its planned route, starting at King Drive and Oakwood Boulevard and concluding at 55th Street after passing through Washington Park. The Chicago Police Department, Chicago Fire Department, and Traffic Management Authority were all on hand to ensure public safety and manage the flow of traffic during the event.
Jason Weaver, a well-known music artist and actor, took on the role of Grand Marshal for this year’s parade. The event also featured a Back to School Festival in Washington Park, offering special performances, free haircuts, a job fair, and local vendors.
The Bud Billiken Parade remains a vital tradition in Chicago, celebrating community and education, even as it faces challenges such as the unfortunate incident that occurred this year.
