Jeff Briggs, Revered Commodore Perry Teacher and Navy Veteran, Passes Away in Commodore Perry

Jeff Briggs, a well-respected teacher, coach, and athletic director at Commodore Perry, passed away on the morning of August 14, 2024. Jeff, who was known for his multifaceted contributions to the school and community, leaves behind a legacy that will be cherished for years to come.

A 1974 graduate of Lakeview High School, Jeff was not only an accomplished athlete, lettering in baseball, but also a talented musician who played the trumpet in the school band. Following his high school graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he completed nuclear power training as a reactor operator. His dedication and hard work earned him an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy by the Secretary of the Navy, where he graduated in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.

Jeff Briggs was married to Cynthia Waybright, another Lakeview graduate. Together, they raised four children—Micheal, Lindasey, Daniel, and Katherine—who all followed in their father’s footsteps by serving in the United States Armed Forces.

In addition to his career in education and service, Jeff was active in competitive pistol and bench rest rifle shooting and played keyboard in his church, further highlighting his diverse talents and community involvement.

The news of Jeff’s passing was met with an outpouring of grief from the Commodore Perry community. Sports Radio 96.7 paid tribute to him on social media, describing him as a "true gentleman and leader for all to admire," and expressing that he "will be greatly missed." Jeff Briggs’s life and legacy are a testament to his character, leadership, and the indelible impact he had on those around him.

Jeff Briggs’s passing is a profound loss for the Commodore Perry community, and his contributions as an educator, mentor, and leader will be remembered and honored for years to come.
