Jody Kessler Passes Away Peacefully After 21-Month Battle with Brain Cancer at Home in Ithaca

Ithaca, NY — Jody “Jyoti” Kessler, a beloved singer-songwriter, yoga teacher, interfaith minister, and cherished member of the Ithaca community, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, August 21, 2024. She was surrounded by her friends and family after a courageous 21-month battle with brain cancer. Her partner, Doug Shire, who devotedly cared for her throughout her illness, shared the news of her passing.

Doug Shire has announced that he will continue to update a page dedicated to Jody’s memory, allowing friends and family to share their tributes to the remarkable life she lived. Jody, known for her deep spirituality and artistic contributions, touched countless lives through her music, teachings, and her role as a wife and mother.

In the days following her passing, Shiva sessions will be held at Jody and Doug’s home on West Hill in Ithaca. These gatherings will take place on Saturday and Sunday, August 24 and 25, from 3-6 PM, followed by potluck suppers. Friends and community members are invited to drop in for part or all of these sessions to share memories, poems, songs, and other remembrances of Jody’s life.

A formal Celebration of Life is scheduled for Saturday, September 21, from 2-4 PM at the Foundation of Light, located at 391 Turkey Hill Rd. in Ithaca. This event will honor Jody’s legacy with music and singing, reflecting the joy she brought to so many. Doug encourages everyone to save the date, with additional details to be provided closer to the event. The Celebration will also be available for participation via Zoom.

Doug Shire welcomes informal visitors in the coming days but requests that those wishing to visit contact him ahead of time by phone or through Facebook to ensure availability.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations in Jody’s memory be made to the Seva Foundation, an organization dedicated to providing vision-restoring healthcare to those in need. Jody’s remains will be privately scattered in places of significance to her, as she had chosen.

The outpouring of love and support from the community reflects the profound impact Jody had on all who knew her. As Doug and the family navigate this difficult time, they express their deep gratitude for the countless acts of kindness shown during Jody’s illness and now in her passing.
