Johannesburg Community Holds Vigil at Vaal Dam as Search for Missing Head Boy Reza Saloojee Continues

Reza Saloojee, the 18-year-old head boy of Greenside High School in Johannesburg, Gauteng, has been missing for over 24 hours after being swept into the Vaal Dam on Sunday, August 11, 2024. The community, alongside family and friends, has been keeping a vigil at the dam, hoping for his safe return.

Reza, who was taking a break from his studies, had spent the day at the dam with his relatives. As they prepared to leave, he went back to the water to retrieve some items. Tragically, the high winds caused the items to move deeper into the water, leading Reza to enter the dam. Despite being a strong swimmer, he was unable to fight the strong current and was pulled under, disappearing into the water.

Search efforts began immediately, involving police divers and a helicopter, but Reza has not yet been found. His father, Bilaal Saloojee, expressed the family’s hope and desperation, stating, "We are still hopeful and praying that Reza would be found alive."

The family has called for prayers, and the community has responded with an outpouring of support. Numerous individuals have shared their thoughts and prayers on social media. Dorcus Mackay wrote, "Praying for his safe return," while Nizam Mahomed added, "May Allah return you to the family in good health. Making duaa for you and the family. Ameen." The sentiment was echoed by many others, with posts emphasizing hope, prayer, and the belief that Reza will be found.

The search at Vaal Dam continues, and the community remains united in their support for the Saloojee family during this difficult time.
