John Hendrickson, a well-known philanthropist and key figure in the Saratoga Springs community, passed away on Monday afternoon at the age of 59. Hendrickson, who was deeply involved in charitable work and horse racing, died at Saratoga Hospital after feeling unwell earlier in the day at his home, Cady Hill, which he had shared with his late wife, socialite Marylou Whitney.
Hendrickson’s passing has sparked an outpouring of condolences on social media. Kathleen Cote expressed her sorrow, commenting, "Awww so Sorry for his Family….he was so young!" Lisa McClaine added, "Too young, wonder what happened." Another commenter, Pamela Marie, lamented, "Wow, I guess this happens when Saratoga bought out by Albany Medical Center… it’s too bad, 59 way too young!"
Hendrickson, who married Whitney in 1997, was known for his extensive philanthropic efforts, particularly in support of children, backstretch workers, and horses. He and Whitney were instrumental in founding the Saratoga Backstretch Appreciation Program in 2008, which provided vital support to the often-overlooked workers in the horse racing industry.
Throughout his life, Hendrickson maintained a diverse career, including roles in professional tennis instruction and as an aide to former Alaska Governor Walter Hickel. His unique personal history also included a memorable appearance on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" in 1989, which led to his meeting with Whitney and their subsequent marriage.
As the community mourns the loss of John Hendrickson, his legacy of service and dedication to improving the lives of others will undoubtedly be remembered and celebrated. His contributions to the Saratoga Springs community and beyond have left a lasting impact, ensuring that his memory will endure for years to come.
