Born Julia Soucy on November 22, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Frank W. and Mildred M. (Kavanaugh) Soucy. She grew up in Watervliet and was educated at Sacred Heart of Mary School and Watervliet High School, graduating in 1961. Following her education, Julia entered the convent and became a Religious Sister of Mercy, taking the name Sr. Marie Cecelia. She dedicated 22 years to teaching in various Catholic schools within the Albany Diocese.

In 1985, Julia left religious life and married Arthur King, with whom she shared 14 years of marriage until his passing in 1999. She continued to serve her community as an intake coordinator at Villa Veritas in Kerhonkson, NY, before returning to Watervliet in 1999. Julia worked at St. Colman’s Home and later as a special education teacher’s aide at Watervliet Elementary School, retiring in 2017.

Julia’s sister, Mary Anne Sawyer, expressed her sorrow on Facebook, writing, "I will miss my sister Judy. During my life, of hurts and happiness she was always praying for me and my family and always cheering me on. Her directive to me was always to be kind and be positive and above all, prayers for everyone."

Rachel Manning, another friend, shared, "Such a positive, beautiful, caring, and wonderful woman. She has touched the lives of so many students and friends. May she rest in peace."

Julia was deeply involved in her parish, Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, where she served on the prayer line and the Liturgy Committee. Her dedication to her faith and community was evident in every aspect of her life.
