Lake Isabella Resident Keith Lee Mulkey Identified as Victim in Fatal Crash That Sparked Borel Fire

Lake Isabella, CA – The Kern County Coroner’s Office has officially identified Keith Lee Mulkey, a 46-year-old resident of Lake Isabella, as the victim of a tragic single-vehicle crash on July 24, 2024. The crash, which occurred around 12:45 p.m. near the Borel Canal, ignited the devastating Borel Fire that consumed several acres of land.

Authorities report that Mulkey was driving alone when his vehicle suddenly veered off the road for reasons that remain unclear. The impact caused the vehicle to catch fire, and despite the swift response of emergency services, Mulkey was unable to be rescued and succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The resulting fire quickly spread to the surrounding dry brush, posing a significant threat to nearby structures. Firefighters from multiple agencies worked tirelessly to contain the blaze, which was exacerbated by strong winds and dry conditions. Their efforts were successful in preventing further destruction, and the Borel Fire has since been fully contained.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is leading the investigation into the crash, seeking to determine the exact cause of the accident and whether any external factors contributed to the tragic event. They are urging anyone with information or who witnessed the moments leading up to the crash to come forward to aid in the investigation.

On social media, the community has shared their thoughts on the incident. Janene Van Dyk expressed her sorrow, stating, “Beyond sad. Sober up, people.” Douglas Black commented, “Because California doesn’t hold criminals accountable,” while Bort Forester added, “Because our DA doesn’t care and aims to settle. Vote her out.” In a different perspective, Dan J Godfrey advised, “How about not passing judgment on someone. No one knows the true circumstances.”

Mulkey’s passing has left a profound impact on the Lake Isabella community, where he was well-known and loved. As the investigation continues, his death serves as a somber reminder of the dangers on the road and the unforeseen tragedies that can arise.
