Larry Petersen, Missing for Months, Found Deceased Near Sedona, Arizona, Bringing Sad Closure to Family and Community

Larry Petersen, a 72-year-old resident of Cottonwood, Arizona, who had been missing since May 25, 2024, was tragically found deceased on August 14, 2024. Larry’s body was discovered in a tent near his truck off a finger road leading from Bill Gray Road, between Cottonwood and Sedona. The discovery was made by hikers and their dogs, bringing a heartbreaking end to the search efforts that had united the community.

Larry, a well-known and beloved figure in his neighborhood, was last seen driving his 2007 white Ford Explorer Sport Trac, heading towards Sedona. He was described as wearing khaki pants, red suspenders, and work boots. Despite extensive searches and the efforts of many, Larry’s fate remained unknown for months until this recent discovery.

The news was confirmed by Larry’s daughter, Hollie Petersen Bellovary, who shared on social media, "With a heavy heart, our journey of looking for our father Larry Petersen has ended. He was found yesterday (8/14) deceased in a tent by some hikers and their dogs. Foul play doesn’t seem to be a factor. At this time, we don’t have any answers or know if he had any medical issues from recent dental procedures."

The announcement was met with an outpouring of support and condolences from the community. Makayla Zufelt, who had been close to Larry, expressed her sorrow, stating, "Larry was a great man and a great neighbor and one of the kindest souls I met in Arizona. Thankful for the closure for his family and everyone who loved him but so very sad to hear of his passing."

Larry’s disappearance had deeply affected his family, friends, and neighbors, who had all hoped for his safe return. While the discovery of his body brings closure, it also leaves many questions unanswered about the circumstances surrounding his death. The community continues to rally around his family, offering support during this difficult time.

Larry Petersen’s passing is a significant loss for those who knew and loved him, and his memory will be cherished by the Cottonwood and Sedona communities.
