Wheeling, WV – Lawrence William Freeland Jr., a beloved member of the Wheeling community, passed away unexpectedly on August 24, 2024, at Ruby Memorial Hospital due to complications following back surgery. Born on March 15, 1953, in Wheeling, WV, Larry, as he was affectionately known, was deeply cherished by his family, friends, and the many lives he touched as an educator, coach, and community leader.
Larry is survived by his loving wife, Denise, and his children, Megan Elizabeth Roskovensky and Sean Patrick Freeland, along with his treasured grandsons, Callum and Alden. Larry’s passion for history, especially his Irish heritage, was well-known, and he was an active member of the Wheeling Chapter of the Ancient Order of the Hibernians and the Knights of Columbus Council #1907.
His career as a history teacher and counselor at Moundsville Jr. High and John Marshall left a lasting impact on countless students, many of whom remained in touch with him long after their school days. As a basketball coach, Larry was equally respected, known for his dedication and the care he showed to his players.
Larry’s deep commitment to his community and faith was evident in his involvement with St. Francis Xavier Parish and his efforts in organizing charitable events. His passing leaves a significant void in the Wheeling community.
Friends and family will gather to honor Larry’s life on Wednesday from 5-8 PM at Grisell Funeral Home & Crematory in Moundsville, with Rosary Devotions beginning at 4:30 PM. A Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 11 AM at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, followed by a private interment.
Sean Duffy, a close friend, shared on Facebook, "Larry was a friend, Irish history guru, Benwood boy, and a fair-minded, decent human being. He shall be missed. ‘So fill to him the parting glass and gather as the evening falls… I’ll gently rise and softly call good night and joy be to you all.’"
Another friend, Joseph Palombo, expressed his sorrow, posting, "My deepest condolence, my friend!"
Larry’s legacy of love, dedication, and service will be remembered by all who knew him. Memorial contributions may be made to the Moundsville-Marshall County Library or the Marshall County Animal Shelter, reflecting Larry’s lifelong commitment to his community.
