Legendary Drag Racer Scotty Richardson Passes Away at 54, Tributes Pour In from Racing Community

Kennedale, Texas – The world of drag racing is mourning the loss of one of its most iconic figures, Scotty Richardson, who passed away on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, at the age of 54. Known as a prolific Sportsman driver, Richardson’s contributions to the sport have left an indelible mark on the racing community.

Scotty Richardson, often hailed as one of the greatest Sportsman drivers in drag racing history, succumbed to a brief illness, leaving behind a legacy that spans decades. His exceptional skills were showcased through his numerous victories, including 39 NHRA national event titles across six different eliminators: Comp, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street. Richardson was particularly celebrated for winning both the Super Comp and Super Gas championships in 1994, making him the first driver to win two championships in a single year.

Richardson’s journey in drag racing began early in life. At just 13 years old, he won a big-bracket race and famously had to explain to a Texas State Trooper how he obtained $3,000 in prize money, a tale that is fondly remembered by those who knew him. His career officially took off in 1988 when he clinched the Super Gas title at the inaugural Houston Raceway Park event.

The drag racing community has been quick to express their grief and pay tribute to Richardson. Poo Poo Pasquali shared on Facebook, "Today the racing world lost the GOAT. Mr. Scotty Richardson. He was the type to help anyone he could and was absolutely one if not the best bracket racer known to the racing community. We never know what’s next in our lives. Always tell the people that mean something to you you love them. To the legend Mr. Scotty, you will be missed but you will never be forgotten, sir. Prayers go out to his family in this tragic time."

Others echoed similar sentiments, with Dave Brown stating, "Them Richardson brothers were hard to beat! RIP," and Kenneth Calp urging, "RIP SCOTTY RICHARDSON. Keep the hammer down!!"

As the community continues to come to terms with Richardson’s passing, his influence on the sport remains undeniable. His name will forever be etched in the annals of drag racing history, not just for his incredible achievements but for the passion and dedication he brought to the sport. Scotty Richardson’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations of racers.
