Lenfred “Lenny” Wilbur John Phelps, a beloved resident of Edgewood and formerly of Colesburg, passed away on Friday, August 9, 2024, at the age of 85. Lenny, who was well-known in his community for his dedication to family, service, and his love for the outdoors, leaves behind a legacy cherished by many.
Born on July 21, 1939, on his family’s farm near Colesburg, Lenny was the sixth child of Merton and Bertha (Kauffman) Phelps. A graduate of Colesburg High School in 1957, Lenny briefly served in the United States Marine Corps before a medical injury led him to a different path. He then worked for John Deere in Dubuque and later embarked on a successful 32-year career as an insurance salesman with Farm Bureau, a role that allowed him to connect with countless people and make a positive impact in their lives.
In 1961, Lenny married Janet Ridenour at the Methodist Church in Colesburg. The couple shared 62 years together, raising two children and enjoying a life full of love and laughter. In 2015, they moved to Edgewood, where Lenny continued to be an active and beloved member of the community.
Lenny’s passions extended beyond his professional life. He was an ardent sports fan, particularly of the Chicago Cubs, Iowa Hawkeyes, and the Ed-Co Viking Softball teams. He also loved spending time outdoors, fishing, hunting, and foraging for morel mushrooms. Lenny’s quick wit and enthusiasm for life were evident in his hobbies, which included playing puzzles, cribbage, and euchre, as well as assisting with flower deliveries—a role that brought him much joy.
He is survived by his wife Janet; daughters Julie Hackbarth and Shelley Snook; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lila Bushaw. His family, friends, and community members will fondly remember his infectious smile and unwavering support.
A memorial service will be held to celebrate Lenny’s life, honoring the remarkable man who touched so many lives through his kindness, humor, and dedication to family and community.
