Lester H. Sternard of Sturgeon Bay Passes Away Peacefully at Age 80

Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin — Lester H. Sternard, a beloved resident of Sturgeon Bay, passed away peacefully at his home on the morning of August 24, 2024. He was 80 years old.

Born on June 23, 1944, Lester was a well-known figure in his community, having graduated from Sevastopol High School in 1962 and going on to manage Goldman Orchard. His career was marked by a diverse array of ventures, including owning By Way Grocery Liquor Store (now CVS), the V-Bar, and The Stein, which he later sold to his brother, Wenzel. Lester also explored real estate through Creative Leisure Realty and owned All American Auto Sales before retiring in 2006 after a successful tenure in auto sales with Jorn’s Auto Sales and Port Plaza Auto.

Lester married Marsha Jo Johnson on October 13, 1979, at Bay View Lutheran Church. His passion for racing was a defining aspect of his life, as he actively supported his sons in their racing endeavors and even raced his own car, earning the nickname "Black Stallion." Lester played a key role in founding the Door County Racing Association in the 1970s and was an active member of the Door County Tavern League.

Lester’s retirement years were spent enjoying the outdoors, where he took pleasure in tending to his garden and maintaining his property. His love for life and dedication to his family were evident to all who knew him.

Lester is survived by his wife Marsha, his three sons, Kevin, Richard, and John, and his nine grandchildren, among other close family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Chuck, and his brother and sister-in-law Wenzel and Ellie Sternard.

Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, September 5, 2024, at 2:00 P.M. at Huehns Funeral Home, with Rev. Dr. Matthew R. Knapp, Sr. officiating. Burial will follow at Shiloh Moravian Cemetery. Friends and family can pay their respects on September 4, 2024, from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., and again on September 5 from noon until the time of service.

Lester’s passing has left a deep void in the hearts of many, as reflected in the numerous condolences shared on Facebook. Janet Ploor wrote, "My sympathy and thoughts and prayers to the family for Lester, rest in peace." Sharon Charnetski echoed these sentiments, offering her "sincere sympathy," while Randy Hartel extended "sympathies to the Sternard family. Thoughts and prayers at this difficult time."

Lester’s vibrant spirit and love for life will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
