New Orleans, Louisiana – Ed Daniels, the iconic sports director of WGNO, passed away on Friday, August 16, 2024, at the age of 67. His death comes three weeks after suffering a severe heart attack while covering the New Orleans Saints training camp in California.
Ed Daniels was a prominent figure in Louisiana sports media. He began his career with WGNO in 1992 and quickly became the face of the station’s sports programming, notably leading the "Friday Night Football" program, which later inspired the creation of "Friday Night Fastball." His work earned him numerous accolades, including the Louisiana Sportscaster of the Year award from the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the New Orleans Press Club.
Ed’s wife, Robin, was with him in California at the time of his heart attack on July 26. Despite the medical emergency, Ed was able to return to New Orleans, thanks to the efforts of Gayle Benson, owner of the New Orleans Saints, who arranged for his flight back to Louisiana. Unfortunately, Ed’s condition did not improve, and he passed away surrounded by loved ones.
The loss of Ed Daniels has deeply affected the community. Many took to social media to express their grief and admiration for the beloved sportscaster. Jacques Doucet from WAFB shared, "I will miss joking around with, doing impressions with & telling old stories with Ed Daniels in the press box & at other sporting events. Ed was all about hard work & service, not ego or self-promotion. A true Louisiana media icon & even better man. Today is a very sad day." Another comment by Taylor Hubert described Ed as "an icon" and noted, "He will be missed."
WGNO has recognized Ed as the most significant and influential figure in the station’s history. The newsroom, which Ed had been a part of for over three decades, mourns the loss of a man whose professionalism and dedication set a high standard for all.
Ed Daniels’ passing marks the end of an era in Louisiana sports journalism, and his legacy will be remembered by all who knew him. The community continues to send their thoughts and prayers to Ed’s family, friends, and countless viewers who were touched by his work.
